Smart Solutions 5-HTP is a break-down product of the amino acid tryptophan. Proteins in our food provide us with amino acids, one of which is tryptophan. Tryptophan is broken down into 5-HTP and then 5-HTP is turned into serotonin. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter that makes you happy and tells your brain that you are satisfied so that you do not need to eat anymore. Low serotonin levels also lead to carbohydrate (sugar) cravings and overeating.

Smart Solutions Smile 5-HTP enhances serotonin, our happy hormone, to help promote a healthy mood balance. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is also responsible for creating feelings of satiety. Smart Solution Smile 5-HTP is enteric-coated, which allows 5-HTP to be absorbed in the small intestine. Other 5-HTP products that are not enteric-coated can cause nausea when optimal doses are taken.

Warnings

If you are taking MAO inhibitors, SSRIs (Prozac, Luvox, Paxil, Effexor, Zoloft) and/or the tricyclic antidepressants (Elavil, Tofranil, Pamelor) or St. John's wort, do not take 5-HTP without discussing it with your health care provider. 5-HTP can be used to wean off antidepressants. Discuss any medication changes with your health care provider. If you wish to wean off your antidepressant medication using SMILE, advise your doctor that you want a prescription for progressively lower doses of your antidepressant medication. Let your doctor know you are going to use SMILE 5-HTP as a replacement. You can start weaning off your medication over a 4 week period. During week one, take 100 mg of SMILE in the morning and at bedtime. In week two, lower your dose of antidepressant medication and take 100 mg of SMILE at morning, dinner and bedtime. Then in week three, your dosage of antidepressant medication should be lowered again and you can take 100 mg of SMILE at breakfast, 100 mg before dinner and 200 mg at bedtime. In week four, you will be on a very low dose of antidepressant medication and will need to take 200 mg of SMILE before breakfast, dinner and bedtime. In week five, you are no longer on antidepressant medication and now you can stay on SMILE. Take one scoop of MAGsmart at bedtime during this process to ensure that you do not experience side effects from withdrawal of the antidepressant medication.

    I take with meals for added digestion benefits Also at bed time with SISU Melatonin and and Mag Smart.

    I find this to be the best solution over the years with ME/CFS and FM for a improved night sleep.
