      Douglas Laboratories Betaine Plus® supplies 650 mg of Betaine HCl and 140 mg of Pepsin in each easy to swallow capsule. Betaine Hydrochloride and pepsin (from porcine) aid in the digestion of proteins and food in the stomach.
       
      Pepsin is considered an enzyme‚ which is a substance that our body uses to speed up certain chemical reactions in the body. In pepsin's case‚ it speeds up the metabolic process responsible for breaking down the food we eat so we can absorb nutrients. Betaine‚ on the other hand‚ is a substance made in a lab that some suggests may be able to replicate the effects of our own stomach acid. When normal stomach acid levels are low‚ it can greatly affect digestion and nutrient absorption; it may also cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Prolonged nutrient deficiency can potentially lead to many other health complications if the source isn't addressed.
       
      Therefore‚ it is possible that since Betaine Plus combines these two ingredients - Betain HCL & Pepsin - it may be able to temporarily aid those with poor digestion.
